In welding, stamping, textile, and construction environments, even the highest-NRR earplugs or earmuffs can reduce protection by half if worn incorrectly or without a proper seal. As an authorized 3M Taiwan distributor, DAIWAN introduces the E-A-Rfit Dual-Ear Validation System — based on Field Attenuation Estimation System (FAES) technology — which objectively measures each worker's Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR) in seconds, helping companies move beyond guesswork and build real hearing conservation programs.

KEY CONCEPT

Why Fit Testing Matters

Traditional hearing protection relies on the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) printed on the package — but real-world attenuation varies dramatically based on each person's ear canal shape, wearing technique, and protector type. The same earplug might deliver 29 dB of protection for one worker and only 10 dB for another — well below what's needed for safety. Only by measuring each worker's individual PAR can you confirm they're truly protected and intervene early when protection falls short.

HOW IT WORKS

Three Simple Steps to Individual Validation

1

Fit

The worker self-inserts their usual earplug or positions their earmuff, exactly as they would on the job.

2

Test

A dual-microphone system is connected and the speaker plays test tones across a broad industrial noise spectrum.

3

Assess

The system calculates the worker's PAR value to determine whether their protector is adequate for their specific work environment.

READING RESULTS

Understanding Pass & Fail

✔ Pass

The protector is correctly fitted and provides sufficient attenuation for this worker's specific noise exposure.

✘ Fail

The protector is not inserted correctly, or the model/size doesn't match this worker's ear canal. Retraining or replacement is needed.

EVIDENCE

Training & Follow-Up: Sustaining Long-Term Protection

Study Background

3M conducted a study across 4 facilities of a major U.S. metal can manufacturer, enrolling 327 workers who had never undergone fit testing. At baseline, 28% of workers failed to achieve adequate protection and were classified as high-risk for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).

Intervention Results

After additional training or switching to a better-fitting earplug, the intervention group (n=91) showed a significant improvement in mean PAR (95% CI: 10.3 – 13.4 dB); at 6-month follow-up (n=70), significant improvement was maintained (95% CI: 6.3 – 11.2 dB).

Key Takeaway

The study also found that workers' self-reported confidence does not reliably predict actual protection levels, and PAR values may decline slightly over time without reinforcement. This confirms that regular fit testing and ongoing follow-up are essential for sustaining effective hearing protection.

WHO SHOULD USE IT

Recommended For

New Employees

Establish a hearing protection baseline at onboarding.

High-Noise Area Workers

Verify that workers achieve the high attenuation their environment demands.

Threshold Shift Risk Workers

Identify under-protected workers early for timely intervention.

Compliance-Driven Organizations

Document fit test records to substantiate your hearing conservation program.

FAQ

E-A-Rfit Frequently Asked Questions

How is fit testing different from an annual audiogram?
An audiogram measures a worker's current hearing status — it's reactive. Fit testing (like E-A-Rfit) measures how much protection a worker's HPD is actually providing — it's preventive. The two are complementary: audiograms detect damage after the fact; fit testing prevents it from occurring.
How long does a test take? Is it complicated?
A single test simultaneously measures both ears across 7 frequencies in seconds, instantly generating a PAR value and Pass/Fail result. The interface is intuitive, and the software records and exports reports automatically.
What PAR value is considered passing?
There is no universal threshold — it depends on the worker's actual noise exposure level. The system determines Pass or Fail based on each worker's exposure needs. As a rule, PAR must exceed the required attenuation for that work environment. We recommend your safety officer set targets based on measured noise levels.
Is fit testing required by regulation?
Occupational safety regulations require employers to implement hearing conservation programs for workers exposed to high noise, including HPD selection, training, and effectiveness verification. Fit testing is a powerful tool for validating program effectiveness and is strongly recommended.
Does E-A-Rfit only work with 3M earplugs?
E-A-Rfit is primarily designed for use with 3M-validated earplugs and earmuffs, along with corresponding test consumables (e.g., Roll Model). Please contact our technical team to confirm whether your current HPDs are within the supported range.
How do we get started?
The easiest first step is to schedule a free product demonstration. Our team will come to your facility, assess your noise environment and workforce size, and help you plan implementation and pricing. Contact us at +886-4-2463-3576 or via LINE @daiwan.
